I had trouble with this problem and I have searched several Android sites and found it's a very common and simple fix. So if you're having this problem, here is the solution:
Go to: Settings, under wireless & network, scroll to bottom and click Mobile Networks, make sure "use packet data" or "Data enabled" is checked. Once this is checked go back to your multi-media message and hit "download" and it should show up!
