App download and update

I have a Galaxy Ace 3 phone, and in Play Store settings I have checked Auto-update apps over wi-fi only. Can someone tell me what happens in the download and update process? Is download one step, and update a second? Or should it be a single seamless process that incorporates both download and update?

What causes me to enquire is the preferred use of wi-fi versus the unwanted usage of the cell network. It seems to me that network usage should occur only during download, and that the update process should only use the phone's internal resources. My experience is that, when I have notifications that updates are available, and I turn wi-fi on, the download process commences, but that's as far as it goes. If I go into My apps in Play Store, I am unexpectedly invited to update the downloaded apps when I would have expected that to happen automatically. If I choose to update the apps, all or one by one, wi-fi is ignored and the cell network is used, at the expense of my usage quote, which I do not want.

Maybe my understanding is incomplete, or the download/update process is stalling before completion. Any help on this subject would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
